Itโ€™s only the start of 2026 and Chinese New Year (CNY) doesnโ€™t start until late February, but itโ€™s never too early to begin stocking up on our favourite Chinese New Year goodies, right? While there are plenty to pick from, pineapple tarts are one of the most quintessential treats for the season. With sweet and tangy pineapple jam paired with crumbly and buttery pastry, whatโ€™s not to love about these bite-sized gems? Hereโ€™s where to get the best pineapple tarts in Singapore to welcome the Year of the Horse.

Pineapple tarts are a type of pastry consisting of pineapple filling and a crust. To make it, the fruit is grated, sweetened, and cooked into a jam, while the dough is formed using flour, butter, and egg yolks before being baked. There are two common forms of pineapple tarts in Singapore. The first is the open-faced style, where the jam sits on top of the pastry. The other is the pineapple ball or roll, which sees the crust shaped entirely around the filling. Sometimes, the crust is fashioned and scored to resemble the fruit.

Along with bak kwa and yu sheng, pineapple tarts are one of the biggest symbols of the Lunar New Year. The pineapple is known as โ€œong laiโ€ in Hokkien, which are homonyms for the words โ€œprosperity (ong)โ€ and โ€œcome (lai).โ€ The fruitโ€™s bright golden hue also draws associations with wealth and fortune.
